Balkansky is the new edition of Kuker Music which comes to celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of the most appreciable labels for Bulgarian music. The project is planned and filled uncompromisingly – with music design and message. It stands on its own path connecting tradition and contemporary, it is known by its modern sound and is both illustrative and abstract – it is just that there is nothing like that. It is an album which is filled with life. According to the authors of the project Ivan Shopov and Ivo Hristov - every person is a bell that should start ringing to find out their true vocation. The authors have met each other 4 years ago and soon they realized that they are speaking the same language and then they made the project Balkansky or Balkan Sky. After year and a half hard work, they selected the 11 compositions from 30 and combine them with Kukers photos made by Ivo Hristov during the Kuker festival in Pernik, Bulgaria. Theres and other musicians that contributes to the album with thеir deep emotional musical accomplishment . Theodosii Spasov plays incredibly not only the kaval flute, but also trumpet. Peyo Peev plays the rebec (gadulka) and Vlada Tomova and Denitsa Serafimova sing in the key compositions “ Letter From America” and “ The Green Balkan Mountains ”. It is worth listening these last two tracks from the album, because you can feel the denouement, the message and the hope hidden inside it. Nearly 10 years ago, when the song “Wretched Youth” was sang in Iglika Trifonova’s film “Letter From America” , it purpose was to awake the Bulgarians who abandoned their home and went to pull up their roots in America, today this song comes back from America, sang by Vlada Tomova in the streets of New York to awake the people who are still asleep in Bulgaria and still do not want to recognize ancient heritage of this land as their own and that is the reason why Balkansky has some cultural layers – the ritual beginning in the face of the kuker and Christian tradition carried by the symbol of the bells and modernism. But the purpose of the album is not to shock and impose its message ultimately to the people – in its own fine way it has music for everyone, and everyone can find the beauty inside it in many different ways. “Wretched Youth” ends with the sounds of taking off airplane, or lets just say it ends with an open-end… and then comes the water and Denitza’s magical performance of “The Green Balkan Mountains”, you can feel the light beyond retrieve coming to your hearts. Listen for a sound, look-out! May be your spiritual bell is ringing right this moment!

The nickname COOH is quite familiar to many people from the HMSU parties , but we do not know much about Balkansky. Actually behind the two nicknames we discover the same person – Ivan Shopov. At the age of 26 he has already have a lot of success in the drum’n’bass scene with 40 vinyls released by foreign labels and constant sets abroad. Lately he is making dubstep and ambient together with Ivo Hristov and the result is a great album – Kuker, in which we can hear the magical sound of Theodosii Spasov’s kaval as well. Beside this Ivan strenuouslydraws….And do so many different things.
Tell us something more about the album?
The idea of the album came up when I met Ivo Hristov 4 years ago. He is the owner of the label Kuker Music and he offered me to do some remixesof the albums he have previously released. The remixes were very good and we decided to make an album together. We wereworkingvery hard every day during the past two years. We had around 20-30 tracks and from them we selected the best 11. In this tracks you can also hear Theodosii Spasov, Penyo Peev, Vlada Tomova and Denitsa Serafimova.
Does the folklore have place in the modern music?
Yes, of course. It has always been part of me, after all I am a Bulgarian. It is my dream since I was a kid to combine my music with folklore. When I started to work with Thedosii Spasov and Ivo Hristov I realized that we are doing the same thing – Bulgarian music. And what we were doing became something unique.
What does the kukers symbolize in the conception ofyour album?
The kukers used to wake people up, they chase away the evil with making noise. In the song “letter form America” for example in which Vlada Tomova sings “Wretched youth” in the streets of New York we made connection with the film Letter to America. In the film a girl is trying to wake up her best friend, who is beyond the ocean and went into coma, with her song. We decided to turn over the symbolism and the message and to send a message from America to Bulgaria and try to awake people here who seemed to be into coma here.

Приемам го като игра. На думи: като Балканско небе. А и думата за игра и свирене на много езици е една и съща. Само музикантите в проекта Бalkansky не са – и слава Богу, съвсем едни и същи с това, което сме свикнали да очакваме. От тях, от поредната бългаска концепция, преоткриваща и по-рядко преосмисляща случващото се по света, в случая музикалния. Един от най-полемичните съвременни джаз-критици Стюарт Никълсън въведе преди години термина “глокализация”. Както подобен термин няма нужда от превод, така и стилът на Бalkansky няма нужда от определение. Играта на акустиката с електрониката не е просто игра на светогледи, поколения и артисти. Концептуалното начало е натоварено с Кръст-а във всичките му измерения. Да, някои слушатели ще почувстват досегашния си “меломански” опит разпънат. Други ще търсят допълнителни знаци, които да ги ориентират на Кръст-О!Пътя. За тях,а и за нас е ключовата за мен, втора (рядко срещан прийом в подреждането на албум) композиция Откъде сте вие. Семплираният глас на типичната балканска баба, блендата на кавала, караща ни да се колебаем това Теодосий ли е и най-вече перфектното смесване представляват звукова картина, нямаща нужда от пластичен еквивалент. И ако Теодосий е в тихата си стихия, какво да кажа за изтъкания козяк от тромпета (!) му, топлещ ни в шестото парче, На разсъмване. Образите, появяващи се и изчезващи в диска Бalkansky са фрагментарни, но убедителни, наслоенията – естествени, пространството – неограничено. Без значение, дали с въздушно звучащата гъдулка на Пейо Пеев в Деветият гостенин или в самодивското присъствие на вокала на Влада Томова, записан по улиците на Ню Йорк в Писмо от Америка (Пуста младост). Деница Серафимова слага деликатна поанта в Зелените балкани и единствено предопределената тишина подсказва, че нещо вече не е същото. Най-малкото възприемането на околното – близко за едни, екзотично за други, но далеч не толкова фолклорно, нито авангардистично. Но и възприемането ни от другите: със сигурност напред, малко встрани и най-вече, нагоре. Ако сте имали късмета като мен да споделите този диск с истински ценители - откриватели и възторжени, отворени към непознатото, не може да не сте завидяли както на тях, така и на себе си. Имах среща пред студио 206 в Дома на Радиото в Мадрид. Две минути преди 16, човекът, който ми бе определил среща се появи от дъното на коридора и единственото му питане бе с кое парче от дисковете, които нося започваме, за да може торежисьорът да го зареди. Нямах и секунда колебание: Откъде сте вие. След едночасовия ефир в най-реномираното предаване за етно-ритми в Испания и испаноговорящия свят (Дискополис, ежедневно с Хосе-Мигел Лопес, над 7000 издания) домакинът ми си отваря мейлбокса. Слушател споделя как преди години срещнал красиво момиче на летище JFK, тя го поканила в родината си, така той открива България. “Въпреки всичките ми усилия да намеря в интернет нещо, което да носи духа на тази моя голяма любов, явно не съм знаел какво да търся. Затова ви благодаря, че с музиката си ме върнахте към най-красивите моменти в живота ми.” - завършва новият фен на Бalkansky. Със сигурност продуцентите и авторите Иван Шопов и Иво Христов са останали верни на духа на Ектор Зазу, на когото посвещават албума. Оформлението, както всички албуми на Кукер е вярно на минималистичния стил, където и един символ – в случая чана е достатъчен, за да звучи дълго в нас идеята, че Бalkansky не е задължително част от съчетание с “тъмен субект”.
